ESK – History of the School

Foundation:

In 1998 Prof. Dr. Gamal Nawara was finally able to fulfil his dream of founding a German school. After spending many years in Germany as a student, and also later with his family, he wanted to create a small piece of Germany in Egypt and simultaneously offer children here the chance to complete the German Abitur without having to leave their home country and family.

To achieve this goal, he took on the challenges of financial strain, high entrepreneurial risk and the large amount of extra work associated with a venture like this. In the meantime, he is personally pleased to see his grandchildren attending the school.

His most important goal however, was to give all those parents who felt in some way connected to the German language, German culture or German education the opportunity to give their children the same chances which they perhaps once experienced themselves, (by living in Germany or going to a German school). Even if the children speak no German whatsoever, they can gradually learn the language starting in Kindergarten and speak it without any problem and follow the lessons by the time they enter Primary school.

Ten years Later

Today, ten years later, it has become apparent that it was worth the risk, as the school has achieved an excellent reputation and is in a constant state of expansion, which shows in both horizontal and vertical dimensions. (Not just that a higher class is added each year, the school is currently preparing for Year 10, but an increasing number of parallel classes are being formed, which build a wide foundation).

Therefore it was very fortunate that during the founding of the school adjacent was bought that is approximately three times the size of the current built area, So there is ample room for further expansion.
In the 2008/2009 school year a new grammar school building is being added to the existing buildings (kindergarten, school house, sports facilities). In addition, a new sports hall and an open air stage are being constructed, as well as a swimming pool for sports lessons.

Recognition by German Authorities

Recognition by the German school authorities and the associated recognition of the German qualifications were and are still vital to the school.

For several years, the ESK has been regularly visited by these authorities and is supervised and well supported. The financial support of the school by the Federal Administrative Office in Cologne in particular and the agreement of the Conference of Ministers of Culture to continue to support the school in future gives the students, parents and staff the necessary security to drive the expansion of the school forward.

Those who attend the school are able to obtain Egyptian (Adadeya and Sanaweya) as well as German (Mittlere Reife [GCSE], Abitur [“A” level]) qualifications. Additionally, students have the opportunity in Year 8 to complete Level B1 of the Deutsche Sprachdiplom (DSD) (German Language Diploma) and in Year 11 Level C1.

Legal Entity

The legal entity of the school is that of a foundation, into which Prof. Dr. Gamal introduced “his” school.

The administrative school business will, in the future, be the responsibility of an association which will make the necessary decisions in a democratic way through its Board. The educational side of school administration is the responsibility of the Headmaster or Headmistress, who makes all corresponding decisions in agreement with the school management team.

Perspectives

As this trust is becoming increasingly apparent, the school can look towards the future with great optimism and the colleagues receive highly motivating recognition of their efforts.
Staffing with qualified and experienced teachers and the maintenance of high standards relies mainly on the willingness of the approval authorities to place their well-founded trust in the future of the school.
All the above developments and further expansion plans are only possible in cooperation with the German authorities named above, but also the corresponding Egyptian authorities
