Continued Professional Development for teachers at the ESK

Due to the special circumstances, continued professional development at German schools abroad presents opportunities which are often not available in this diversity within Germany. Firstly there are the in-school events, then the external training sessions organised by representatives of the ZfA and finally the wide variety of events offered by German cultural organisations.

I Continued professional development at school
- a week-long training course taking place each year in the summer vacation approx. 10 days before the beginning of term (topics: lesson delivery, lesson planning, conflict management...)
- annual introduction or further training for teachers working in the Montessori sector
- further training courses on problem areas and solutions in connection with intercultural conflicts.
- regular Professional Development days on current topics, mostly proposed by colleagues.

II External training courses
- special training courses for new staff, especially as an introduction to teacher sent from abroad
- further training for teachers of German as a Foreign Language (DaF) and German Studies (DFU)
- specific training or seminars for school managers: Principals, Directors of Studies ...
- further training for teachers in different types of school: Pre-school, Primary school, Grammar school.
- further training on a wide variety of topics for teachers across the range of schools: topics related to the host country, Egypt, the specific school clientel, new teaching methods and lesson design, introduction to new examinations or exam formats (e.g. DSD).

In the 2007/2008 academic year the following professional development courses are offered or supported by the ZfA, some by the Deutsche Evangelische Oberschule, a cooperation partner of the Europa-Schule, and others planned and carried out by the ZfA consultant, Hans-Georg Schröder.

III Further training courses offered by other establishments

Within the framework of the initiative “Schools: Partners of the Future” by the German Foreign Office, the Pädagogische Austauschdienst (Educational Exchange Service) of the Conference of the Ministers of Education and Culture in cooperation with appointed institutions carries out annual professional development courses for teachers in countries such as Egypt.
- German Teachers´ Day at the Goethe Institute in Cairo on 31.10.2007
- Lectures by visiting guest speakers on a variety of subjects (DAAD, Goethe Institute, DAI)
